Critical Role Birthdays: Taliesin 2017

Description

I'm beginning 2017 with a Whitestone themed card for the Critical Role gunslinger we all love, Percy DeRolo. While his birthday isn't for another few days he did open this card on this evening's periscope with Matt, Marisha, and Brian so here it is!

I knew from the start that I wanted a Whitestone Castle window for this card's layout but what that entailed morphed as I worked on it. Behind the working windows a doorway and picture frame sit in the back. In the center Bad News leans against a desk on which a schematic journal, quill, and scattered paper sit. The DeRolo family banner hangs over the windowsill of whitestone brick. The stones have a shimmer to them but it is difficult to capture. The card is dimensional and contains about 12 layers worth of material. Each piece was hand drawn specifically for this card, even down to the woodgrain on the window. To date I think this is the most complicated card I have made. Overall had a blast making it.

This card is great! I like the way you captured the simple beauty of the whitestone by giving it a little shimmer, so it makes the transition from white stone to whitestone. Moreover this window is very well crafted, woodgrain makes it more plastic for the viewer and it has this old school-style about it - seems fitting for Whitestone. And is that Bad News peaking out of the window? Nice detail, giving a good look on the characterization of Percy as a family man - with his home town as synecdoche (totum pro parte) - with his own dark secrets - with his gun as a metaphor.
Also a wonderful simple depiction of the Sun Tree, which needs no words at all.
Hope my English isn't too terrible. And is it Thursday yet?
